Intersection Closures and Construction Updates

This just in from the City of Minneapolis…

Eastbound Lake St will be closed between Blaisdell to 1st Ave starting tomorrow morning (May 22nd). Thomas and Sons has some removal and manhole work along Lake St. At the same time Center Point will be working on their gas main work along Lake Street at Nicollet. Local access to Office Max and Shops will continue to be on Nicollet from Lake St.

Note of a coming closure:The intersection of 31st St and Nicollet Ave will need to be closed for underground work.  This closure will start following the completion of the work on Lake St. Other lane closures on 31st St may be needed in addition to the full closure. Information will be shared as it’s available.  It’s anticipated that this closure will begin on or around May 29th and will last no more than 10 working days.

Minneapolis Water successfully transferred customers to temporary water service last Friday. They will begin the cleaning and lining process this week. There should be minimal disruption to water service. Additional information will be shared as it’s available.

Nicollet Reconstruction Updates for Tuesday May 15

The Lake to 32nd Streets phase of the work is moving along nicely and in currently on schedule, the details of the work to date and upcoming work are:

This week Thomas & Sons will continue storm sewer work in the Lake to 32nd Street section of the project. There should be no additional disruptions due to this work.

On Friday May 18 the City will change customers from Lake to 32nd streets to temporary water. Any disruption in service should be minimal (less than 5 minutes) and they will need access to properties to conduct this work. Minneapolis Water will be in touch with property owners to coordinate this work and NEHBA will help to communicate this as we know more information.

Temporary water will be put in place for the two remaining phases of the project (32nd Street to 35th Street and 35th Street to 36th Street) at the same time. This work is not yet scheduled but will probably happen sometime around the end of June or the beginning of July. This will happen so that the work can be done as efficiently as possible from a cost perspective.

CenterPoint and Thomas & Sons are working to coordinate the scheduled closure of 31st Street so that it impacts traffic as minimally as possible. The closure of 31st street is expected to occur just after the Memorial Day holiday. There will be times when 31st Street will go to 1 lane in each direction for accessibility reasons. We will update with details once they are known.

CenterPoint Work – Why they sent so far south

I had a moment this week where I said to myself “OK, now THAT makes sense!” This happened when it was explained to me why CenterPoint went as far south on Nicollet as they did this year despite many thinking that no work would be done south of 36th Street in 2012.

The reason was that CenterPoint HAS to stay ahead of the contractors and they also can’t do any work until after at least May 1 when the “winter” is over and they can cut off the gas without turning off the heat on a cold day. So if there is any chance that construction can begin earlier than May 1 (which it just might…more to come as I get better information) CenterPoint needs to be in and out of those areas.

So there was some logic to the work being done in 2012. We are working closely with the city, the contractor and the utility companies to avoid any further surprises!

CenterPoint has now completed their work in the construction area and restoration crews will be patching the areas that had been worked on, they should be done by Friday May 18.

Project updates for May 8

The construction crew has arrived and work has begun on Nicollet Ave between Lake and 32nd streets. Today’s stakeholder meeting was informative, notes are below.

The City has committed to adding “Local Access” signs to 1st and Blaisdell Aves with names of businesses in the affected area posted within the next few days.

Other signage is being tweaked to better suit traffic needs and will be finalized soon.

Wells Fargo and Metro Transit will be placed on temporary water this week.

The intersection at 31st and Nicollet will be closed for up to 10 working days and the current schedule would indicate that will happen after Memorial Day. 31st Street will otherwise be open during that time, only the intersection at Nicollet will be closed. Detours will be posted.

CenterPoint has almost completed their work at 38th & Nicollet and will be laying blacktop over the work areas and removing the orange cones. Street restoration work will continue through next week. After CenterPoint and street restoration has work is complete, all utility work will be confined to the construction area currently being worked on (sewer, water, etc.). There should be no additional disruptions outside of the area being worked on.
